Irvine Summer in the City: Free Movies, Concerts, and Family-Friendly Events All Summer Long

One of the best parts of summer in Irvine is how many free, family-friendly events the City puts together across local parks. The City of Irvine’s 2026 Summer in the City series runs throughout June, July, and August and includes outdoor movies, summer concerts, Symphony in the Cities, and a special 55th Anniversary Homecoming Dance.

For families in Portola Springs, the Great Park neighborhoods, Woodbury, Stonegate, Eastwood, Northwood, and the rest of Irvine, this is a great reminder that you do not always need to leave the city to find something fun to do. Irvine’s summer calendar is built around simple community activities: bring a blanket, bring the kids, grab food from a food truck, and enjoy a relaxed evening outside.

The Movies on the Lawn series takes place at Hicks Canyon Community Park. Guests are encouraged to bring low-back chairs, blankets, and a picnic. Food trucks are scheduled to be available beginning at 6:30 p.m., with movies starting after sunset, weather permitting. The 2026 movie lineup includes Lilo & Stitch on June 26, A Minecraft Movie on July 17, How to Train Your Dragon on July 24, and Zootopia 2 on August 14. Additional parking is listed at Hicks Canyon Elementary School and along Viewpark Avenue.

The Summer Concerts series is held at Mike Ward Community Park — Woodbridge, with concerts beginning at 5:30 p.m. The City describes these as family-friendly outdoor concerts covering a variety of music genres. Guests can bring picnic-style food or purchase snacks from local food trucks. The 2026 concert lineup includes Jimmy’s Buffet, a Jimmy Buffett tribute band, on June 6; 4 Lads from Liverpool, a Beatles tribute band, on June 27; and Jukebox, a top 40 band, on July 18.

All Summer in the City events are free, and the City notes that no tickets or pre-registration are required. Seating is first come, first served, so guests should bring blankets or low-back chairs and consider arriving early. Layered clothing is also recommended, which is good advice for Irvine summer nights when the temperature can cool off after sunset.

Another highlight is Symphony in the Cities, scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Mike Ward Community Park — Woodbridge. The City describes it as a long-standing summer tradition featuring Pacific Symphony performing popular classics, pop tunes, and patriotic songs in a relaxed outdoor park setting. Family-friendly pre-concert activities begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the concert at 7:00 p.m.

There is also a special City of Irvine 55th Anniversary Homecoming Dance scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2026, at the Great Park. The event is designed as a celebration of Irvine’s 55 years, with food, drinks, a happy hour, dancing, and a homecoming-style community atmosphere.

What makes Summer in the City special is not just the events themselves, but how accessible they are. These are the kinds of activities that make Irvine feel connected: neighbors gathering at parks, kids running around before the movie starts, families bringing picnic blankets, and residents enjoying music and entertainment without needing to buy expensive tickets.

For anyone newer to Irvine, this summer series is also a great way to explore different parts of the city. Hicks Canyon Community Park and Mike Ward Community Park are two established community spaces, and the Great Park continues to grow as one of Irvine’s major gathering places. The City’s special events calendar also shows additional summer events, including Movies on the Lawn on July 17 and July 24, the Jukebox Summer Concert on July 18, the 55th Anniversary Homecoming Dance on August 8, and Symphony in the Cities on August 15.

If you are looking for simple, local things to do this summer, Irvine’s Summer in the City calendar is worth saving. It is free, family-friendly, easy to attend, and a great example of why so many people love living in Irvine.
